Green Camps 2010

In an effort to continually expand and update its program curricula, as well as further promote the development of Armenian youth, this year Green Tavush has incorporated teamwork and leadership elements into its traditional Green Camp format, and is proud to introduce the 2010 Advanced Environmental Leadership Camps.

The 2010 season of Environmental Leadership Camps has come to a successful conclusion.  Green Camps are a joint venture between the Green Tavush NGO and the United States Peace Corps, a relationship that has existed for the last ten years.  This year, five camps were held in four separate villages and cities in Armenia.  Four of the camps were day camps involving students between the sixth and eighth grades. The final camp was an overnight camp where the campers that showed the most promise to be effective leaders from the day camps were invited to learn a more in-depth curriculum and improve their leadership and team-working skills.  A total of one hundred and eighty-six students attended Green camps this summer.

Green Camps focused on three major components: environmental issues in Armenia and the world, leadership, and team building.  The environmental aspect of the camp is something vitally important for Armenia due to the number of environmental problems located here and the lack of activism and concern among the general population.  The latter two components, leadership and team building, were added to the curriculum for this year.  Each activity and lesson was meant to stress a different part of one of the two dynamics and was followed by a discussion moderated by Armenian and American counselors.  Common topics for these discussions included the roles of team members, individual strengths, and characteristics of good leaders.  To reinforce the leadership lessons, students were responsible for planning and implementing service projects at each camp.  Students nominated by counselors to attend the overnight camp will be responsible for a final service project in their communities after the summer.
